So, yeah. That Star Trek movie.
I rather enjoyed it. I’ve always had an aversion to Star Trek. The various episodes, movies and bits of movies I’ve seen did nothing for me. I didn’t grow up watching it as I did with Star Wars and it just seemed silly. But this new movie was fun, slick, pretty newbie-friendly and quite funny. I kinda want to see it again. Some random thoughts:
- What was up with all the lens flare? JJ Abrams done gone lens flare crazy and the more he used it, the more it irked me.
- Why don’t 99% of the Starfleet women wear pants? I mean, sure, I’m not complaining from a casual viewer’s perspective—ladies in short-skirted uniforms is aces in my book. It just seems strange to me that a future military organization would think that’s safe attire for crewmembers.
- Are fat people extinct in that future? That’s definitely a possibility. Genetic shmengineering or what have you could easily make humans healthier. It’s just odd. I guess I just wanted a Porkins in there.
- I don’t really have anything bad to say about the cast or the acting. They were all pretty damn good.
- Simon Pegg! Yup.
- I liked the Slusho reference.
- I wanted the big monster on Hoth—uh, the snowy planet—to be the Cloverfield monster. Or, like, its cousin.
- People talked about how the Starship looked like it was designed by Apple. Yeah, it did. Pretty cool lookin’.
- I liked the time travel stuff. Although I hear they did time travel in another movie and it had whales and something something something. Still, old Spock was cool.
So, in conclusion, I now happily count myself as a fan of the Star Trek.
