Elizabeth and I saw Peter Hook of Joy Division play a few weeks back and I think I was telling her about this cover and how rad it is. It is. Rad.

Coalesce - The Get Up Kids Split

Coalesce - “I’m Giving Up on This One” (The Get Up Kids’ “Second Place”)

I love cover songs. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I also love this split, which I believe I still have somewhere. Coalesce kills with great covers—Get Up Kids, Boy Sets Fire, Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc. Man, can’t wait to see Coalesce at Krazy Fest!

I’m going to Krazy Fest in Kentucky this week. Getting psyched for it by listening to the bands who are playing the shows

@yelyahwilliams, @boomersaveus & @ethanluck covered @autotunethenews’ Bed Intruder song. I love it! Oh…in non-Twitter speak that means  Paramore’s Hayley Williams, New Found Glory’s Jordan Pundik, and Relient K’s Ethan Luck covered the song.

Meme Remix of the Day: Paramore’s Hayley Williams, New Found Glory’s Jordan Pundik, and Relient K’s Ethan Luck cover the Greogory Brothers’ Billboard-approved “Bed Intruder Song.”

#DailyCover: The Morning Pages - “Telephone” (originally by Lady Gaga)

I popped in the Morning Pages’ album “Rising Rain” last week, as it was in my big stack of music to listen to. It was definitely one of my favorite records from the stack and I’m diggin’ on their Gaga cover. It has a good barroom rock, country & soul kinda sound. Not what I usually gravitate towards, but I’m into it.

Anyway, this cover’s rad. Free mp3 download here.

#DailyCover: Gifford Children’s Choir from Racine, WI covering “Still Alive,” from the videogame “Portal” (written by @jonathancoulton). Via every gaming site and blog. ;)

I’m a HUGE dork for “Portal” and this song, which plays during the closing credits, got in my brain and lived there for months. We downloaded it for “Rock Band.” I have the mp3 on my computer. I’ve seen and heard numerous covers…LOVE IT.

This version is extra cool since they’re kids singing a song about a robot doing science and trying to kill someone and surviving its own destruction. The video’s kinda crappy, but the audio rules.

Buy the “Still Alive” mp3 by Jonathan Coulton & GLaDOS for $.89.

Pink Houses

Avail - Dixie

#DailyCover: Avail — “Pink Houses” from the album “Dixie” (originally by John Cougar Mellencamp)

Avail’s a punk/hardcore band from Richmond, VA. I remember the first time I saw them play, it was on a Wednesday night at this place called the PWAC on Long Island in 1996. It was one of those experiences that stays with you, and at 15, it definitely helped cement my love of the music, the shows, the scene, the people, the ideas, etc. I’ve seen Avail at least a dozen times, probably more, over the years and they’ve always been amazing. I hope they’ve not called it quits forever.

I’m not much for that Cougar fella, but Avail’s version makes me want to drive around really fast and have conversations with strangers.

The Daily Cover Song

I’ve had this thought in my head for a few weeks that I wanted to post my favorite cover songs on my blog. I have a few hundred cover songs and am always finding more that I love, so I won’t be lacking for material. Hopefully when folks listen to the songs I post, they’ll go check out the artists on both sides and find some new music. Discovering new music and new versions of rad tunes is one of my favorite things about the Internet. There’s always more, more, more.

So, that’s the plan. A daily cover song—not downloadable, just streamable—with a little bit of info/opinion/perspective and links to find out more. I just have to keep it up. :)
